family photo session - tips for clients

Family sessions are always so much fun! But also can be stressful and overwhelming when you are planning for the perfect session! Choice of clothing, choice of location, choice of time of day is a lot to think about when you are doing all the thinking and the decision making for the whole family!  So let me help you out just a little by giving you a few tips and tricks I’ve been telling all my clients for years….

1. choose your clothing carefully…

location choice and clothing choice go hand in hand. I always recommend you choose clothing FIRST. Something that is comfortable for the whole family to be wearing without any problems or fuss for the length of the session. COMFORT IS IMPORTANT!! If you are having a difficult time choosing colors, CHECK OUT MY PINTEREST BOARDS HERE!!

2.  the look and feel of your images…

the look and feel of your portraits will be in your choice of outdoor location and the time of day.  now that you know what you and the fam are wearing, we can decide between a more of an “earthy feel” (grass, open fields, trees) or more of an “urban and contemporary feel” (buildings, structures, etc)  Thankfully, San Antonio & the surrounding areas have plenty of both and everything in between! Check out my favorite outdoor locations HERE..

3. don’t be afraid to share your ideas with us…

these are your portraits! this your legacy! your thoughts, ideas, suggestions will always come first! do you like Pinterest as much as I do?? create a board of your favorite samples you’ve gathered along the way! either it’s a pose you simply want to recreate or specific creative lighting you would like showcase in some of your poses… we are open to it all and excited most of all!

4. patience is a virtue …

As parents, we can’t control EVERYTHING, and sometimes the little ones might not be having it during our photo time.  This is not the time to show them who’s boss….. because to get the best smiles out of everyone…THEY are the boss!! Sometimes it takes everyone, including adults, a little extra time to get adjusted and comfortable. So no worries, we have accounted for times like these, we always try to follow your kid’s lead to gain their trust and smiles!

5. have fun with your family

show us who you really are, let us capture your love through our lens. Embrace each other, snuggle while sitting, giggle with one another. We won’t always give a countdown before taking the photo, the candid moments between you and your family are sometimes the best images of them all. Remember, not everyone has to be looking and smiling at the camera at the same time…the engagement with one another are sometimes the ones that will hang in your home for a lifetime.

6. the final preps…

make sure to get some food in the tummies before photographing, if absolutely no time, bring snacks for those that might get fussy if you hear growling down below.  Get plenty of rest the night before or a nap before the session! Main thing is to just relax and relax, have fun with your time together and let us capture the essence of what makes y’all happy together.
